Austin’s vibrant film scene is about to get even more exciting as the Indie Meme Film Festival (IMFF) returns for its 10th anniversary, bringing the very best in South Asian and Iranian independent cinema to Central Texas.

Running from April 9th to 13th at AFS Cinema, this milestone year promises a lineup of thought-provoking films, engaging discussions, and cultural experiences that cinephiles won’t want to miss.

A Decade of Impactful Storytelling

Since its inception, IMFF has been a platform for socially relevant storytelling, showcasing diverse voices from South Asia and Iran.

The festival has sparked meaningful conversations on topics ranging from human rights to cultural identity, creating a space where film serves as a bridge between communities.

“Ten years in the making, the Indie Meme Film Festival has grown into Austin’s premier South Asian film festival.” said Animon Jose, Indie Meme Board Member and Programming Chair.

“Over the years, we’ve evolved, striving to shine the ‘Light from Within.’ This year, expect to see exciting additions to our signature lineup – more glamour while keeping our soul intact.”

Must-See Films at IMFF 2025

This year’s festival features a curated selection of award-winning dramas, documentaries, and indie productions. Three standout films include:

“Pooja, Sir” – Directed by Deepak Rauniyar

A poignant drama exploring gender identity and self-discovery, this film follows Pooja, a transgender woman navigating societal expectations in a conservative community.

Rauniyar’s storytelling is both intimate and universally resonant, making this a must-watch for those who appreciate films that challenge norms and inspire change.

“Back Then: The Story of Live Music in Bombay” – Directed by Anindita Dutta Roy

This dynamic documentary takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through Mumbai’s golden era of live music, from the 1980s to the 1990s.

Featuring archival footage and rare interviews, the film captures the city’s jazz and rock scenes, showcasing the artists who shaped India’s musical landscape.

Music lovers and history buffs alike will find this a captivating celebration of artistic expression.

“And Towards Happy Alleys” – Directed by Sreemoyee Singh

A deeply personal documentary offering a rare glimpse into Iran’s artistic underground, this film weaves together Persian poetry and cinema to highlight the resilience of Iranian artists, particularly women, who continue to create despite heavy censorship.

A powerful statement on freedom and artistic defiance, this documentary is essential viewing for lovers of art and activism.
